When to request a Certified Translation and an Official Translation?

This depends on the destination and/or the processes that the documents to be translated will go through. In this case, a simple translation will not be of much help.

On several occasions, it is necessary for a translation to be endorsed by an institution or to follow a regulatory process. For this reason, there is the Certified Translation, which involves a Certified Translator, who is authorized by the Peruvian Association of Professional Licensed Translators (CTP) to issue Certified Translations. This type of translation includes a cover page with the information of the Certified Translator who has issued such document, as well as the name of the translated document. After the cover page, the translation is attached on letterhead with the Translator's data, together with the corresponding stamps and signatures. This process is regulated by the CTP and is included in the Certified Translation Procedures Manual.

Generally, this type of translation is requested when the document is to be part of public tenders, bids, negotiations or other processes of a commercial and financial nature.

On the other hand, we have the Official Translation, which involves a Sworn Translator (TPJ). This professional is a Licentiate in Translation who is authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) to issue Official Translations. In this case, the translation is sealed with a ribbon and includes the signature, seal and the Translator's information. In order to perform an Official Translation, the original documents must have an apostille (certification from the MRE for use before authorities abroad). The service is regulated by the TPJ Regulation approved by Supreme Decree N° 126-2003 RE.

In some cases, documents that require an official translation include birth certificates, identity documents, school certificates, passports, court rulings, marriage or death certificates, among others.
